Pigeon in custody on suspicion of drug smuggling

Zenica prison in Bosnia has discovered that one of the inmates – who kept a pigeon as a pet – was stoned soon after the pigeon came back from a flying trip outside the prison.
On inspection of the bird, prison officers found that it may have been carrying heroin in bags that were attached to its legs.
“We suspect that the pigeon carried the drugs from Tuzla” Deputy Warden Pojavnik said, before adding, “We do not know what to do with the pigeon, but for the time being it will remain behind bars.”
Earlier this year a similar case of pigeons being used by prisoners as drug runners was uncovered at a jail in Brazil. Apparently as well as drugs, the birds were being used to carry mobile phones too.
This story conjured up some really funny mental images for me so here’s my take on what else the story might have said…
Zenica prison has hit the headlines before when Amnesty International brought the poor living conditions of prisoners to the world’s attention. They have yet to release a statement on the conditions under which the pigeon is doing bird.
Some reports have said that the pigeon has been banging a piece of cuttle fish off his cell’s bars by way of protest while others report that he’s ‘going cold turkey in there’ having been unable to get heroin since his incarceration.
This report may be confused with another inmate’s plight however as it’s understood that a turkey is being held at the same facility after it deliberately stuffed itself with narcotics.
The pigeon and the turkey have both gone on hunger strike in the last few days but keep being forced to eat by the guards. One Prison Officer told the pair,
“If at first you don’t suck seed, we’ll try and try again.”
